What is a corneal transplant?

Corneal transplanation is a procedure where some or all of the cornea — the front clear part of the eye— is replaced with healthy tissue from a donor.

What are the different types of corneal transplants?

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK): The full thickness of central cornea is replaced with donor tissue.
  • Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK): This is a partial thickness transplant that replaces the front 90% of the cornea. The patient’s own inner corneal layers, Descemet’s membrane and endothelium are preserved. This is suitable for conditions that affect only the front layers of the cornea, such as keratoconus.
  • Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) or Descemet Stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK): Only the inner corneal layers are replaced with donor tissue and the patient’s own front corneal layers are preserved. These are now the preferred techniques for treatment of Fuch’s endothelial dystrophy.

Key Benefits of Corneal Transplantation

Restored vision: Corneal transplants improve vision in conditions where corneal clarity is reduced.

Reduced risk of complications: Partial thickness transplants have reduced complication rates and offer greater clarity of vision.

Restored corneal strength: Corneal transplants can replace unhealthy and weak corneal tissue and restore strength.

Regained independence

Reduced risk of trips and falls
